NM-165 is a mix of asphalt and dirt from Placitas, NM to Sandia Crest.

Beginning on NM-165 just east of the intersection of I-25/US-550 near Bernalillo, proceed east on NM-165.  Passing through the scenic village of Placitas is a nice slow paced winding road.  About a third of the way along, the route turns into a dirt road.  This road passes through Palo Duroso Canyon, past the Sandia Man Cave, Cañon Media, Palomas Peak, Capulin Canyon, as well as several picnic areas and campsites.  At the top of the dirt section, NM-165 merges into NM-536.  Turn left and proceed up to the overlook at Sandia Crest.

Total distance is about 22 miles with about 7.5 miles of dirt.  The dirt is generally considered easy, but is not necessarily good for road bikes, baggers.  Dual Sport and Adventure bikes will have no problems, even with relatively inexperienced riders.
